Fashion Club Fashion Recap

If you were a preteen in the late 90's, you probably remember the MTV animated series, "Daria."

Without delving too deep into needless exposition, Daria was a dry, sarcastic girl whose Saturday nights were mostly spent watching television with her best (and only) friend.

However, not everything was dour in Daria's world.

In fact, the brightest source of sartorial sunshine in her life was her very own younger sister/polar opposite, Quinn.

To put it simply: Quinn was Queen.

That is, alongside her three best friends/fellow Fashion Club Members:

Sandi

Tiffany

and Stacy

Together, the four spent their days reading Waif magazine, criticizing each others' outfits (out of love and concern, of course,) and pretty much spreading their unique brand of back-handed fabulousness through the halls of their school.

Really though, the remarkable thing about the Fashion Club was just how many different outfits they managed to rock during the course of the series.

(After all, the land of animation is nothing if not a place where everyone wears the same thing. every. day.)

Check out the many ways in which the Fashion Club bucked the trend:

Not only that, but they also never failed to bring the fashion-related storylines, some of which are curiously easy to follow in picture-form:

Sandi Rocks the 60's:

"Does This Make Me Look Fat?"
(An illustration of Quinn's growing exasperation with Tiffany)

The Same Dress:
A Fashion Club Crisis

The Girls Give Back... Sorta:
A (Failed) Attempt at a Clothing Donation Drive

Really, there aren't enough words in the English language to express the love that I have for these girls...

And since I'm not bi-lingual, I'll just let this picture speak for me:

If I ran the world.

Drag Fashion Recap

This Fashion Recap is going to shine it's spotlight down on the brightest, twinkliest star in the Drag Queen sky:

RuPaul, during the second season of her reality show/competition, Drag Race!

Now, it goes without saying that this is gonna be the gayest, sparkliest, most fabulous Fashion Recap ever, but even I wasn't prepared for just how fierce this bitch is.

You see, at the beginning of every episode's elimination ceremony, Ru prowls down the catwalk to one of her disco-tastic tunes, rocking some ridiculous looks, which I will now walk you through.

Take my hand, step lightly, and hold on to your wig:

The Ruby Slippers in dress-form.

A bit understated for a drag queen, but the metallic details ensure that the "sparkle quota" is met...

Big hair, big hips, big flower.
(Beautiful colors, too.)

RuPaul has never met a muppet she didn't like... to wear.

Glam-Rock on steroids... Err, make that estrogen.

I love how she never passes on an opportunity to connect her hairstyle with an ensemble.
(Those red ruffles are made of win.)

She called this look a "tall glass of lemonade," and I couldn't have said it better myself!
(But that pink lemonade-colored hair is making me thirsty.)

We began with the Ruby Slippers and conclude with the Emerald City.
The mark of a true professional.

Now, what phrase could I possibly use to conclude this post, other than the very trademark of RuPaul, herself?

And so, I leave you with these words of inspiration and motivation:

... You. Better. Work.

Deathly Fashion Recap

"Death Becomes Her" was a 1992 movie that focused on Hollywood's obsession with youth and beauty.

The two main characters of the film, Madeline and Helen, (played by Meryl Streep and Goldie Hawn,) were a couple of women who defined the term "frenemies" a full decade and a half before it became part of the Hollywood lexicon.

Their nicknames for each other? "Mad" and "Hel."

To make a long story short, the two women (unbeknownst to each other) both end up drinking a potion, administered by a fabulously-dressed cougar named Lisle, that not only shaves years off of their appearances, but also causes them to live forever.

... Well, the two frenemies wind up trying to "kill" each other, only to realize that each is invulnerable.

I believe the term, "Battle Royale" is applicable here...

Let's start with Madeline, whose sartorial plan-of-attack on her "friend" consists of:

Power suits, sweat suits, and silk suits... A product of her decade, for sure.

Helen, on the other hand:

... Counter-attacks with elegant, body-hugging formal wear that is much more agreeable, at least when looked upon through the "retrospective" fashion lens.

(In other words: These were killer looks then, and they're killer looks now.)

But of course, the battle ends in a truce, with our two beauties making nice:

(After a gunshot-to-the-stomach and a shovel-to-the-head, of course.)

The real contender here is their potion-dealer, who pistol-whips both of their asses with these stunning ensembles:

Ginormous collars, ridiculous head-pieces, and a "blouse" made entirely out of jewels.

Who needs to live forever? I'd be happy with just one lifetime full of such opulence.

Ladies and gentlemen, we have a winner.
